PRP & PRF Hair Restoration
Support Fuller, Healthier-Looking Hair—Naturally
Hair thinning can affect both men and women and may occur because of genetics, hormones, nutritional deficiencies, stress, illness, medications, or other medical conditions.
At Glo & Glam MedSpa & Skincare, we offer PRP and PRF hair-restoration therapy using concentrated components from your own blood. These regenerative treatments are designed to support existing hair follicles and promote a healthier environment for hair growth—without surgery or synthetic filler.
What Is PRP Hair Restoration?
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. During treatment, a small sample of your blood is drawn and processed to concentrate the platelets within the plasma.
Platelets contain naturally occurring proteins and growth factors involved in healing and tissue signaling. The prepared PRP is carefully injected into targeted areas of the scalp to support existing hair follicles.
Clinical studies suggest that PRP may help certain patients with hereditary or pattern hair loss. Results and treatment protocols vary.
What Is PRF Hair Restoration?
PRF stands for platelet-rich fibrin. Like PRP, it is created from a sample of your own blood.
PRF is processed differently and forms a fibrin-rich solution containing platelets and other blood components. The fibrin matrix is intended to provide a gradual release of naturally occurring growth factors in the treated area.
PRF is a newer approach to hair restoration, and clinical research is more limited than it is for PRP.
PRP vs. PRF Hair Restoration
| PRP | PRF |
|---|---|
| Platelet-rich plasma | Platelet-rich fibrin |
| Processed to concentrate platelets in plasma | Processed to create a fibrin-rich platelet concentrate |
| More extensively studied for pattern hair loss | Newer treatment with emerging research |
| Generally remains liquid during treatment | Develops a fibrin matrix after preparation |
| May use an anticoagulant during processing | Commonly prepared without an added anticoagulant |
Neither option is universally better for every patient. Your provider will evaluate your hair-loss pattern, medical history, and goals before recommending PRP or PRF.
Potential Benefits
PRP or PRF hair-restoration therapy may help appropriate patients:
- Reduce the appearance of progressive thinning
- Support existing hair follicles
- Decrease shedding
- Improve the appearance of hair density
- Increase the appearance of hair thickness
- Support healthier-looking hair
- Complement other hair-loss treatments
- Support hair following a transplant when medically appropriate
Results vary. PRP and PRF cannot create new follicles in areas where follicles are no longer functioning, and treatment does not guarantee hair regrowth.
What Types of Hair Loss May Respond?
PRP and PRF are most commonly considered for patients with early or moderate pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia.
Treatment may be considered for:
- Male-pattern hair thinning
- Female-pattern hair thinning
- Gradual thinning at the crown
- Widening of the hair part
- Reduced hair density
- Early recession with functioning follicles
- Some forms of diffuse thinning after an appropriate diagnosis
Earlier treatment may offer a better opportunity to support follicles that are still active.
Finding the Cause of Hair Loss
Hair loss is not a single condition. Effective treatment begins with understanding why it is occurring.
Hair thinning or shedding may be associated with:
- Genetics
- Hormonal changes
- Thyroid disorders
- Iron or nutritional deficiencies
- Significant weight loss
- Pregnancy or the postpartum period
- Illness, surgery, or severe stress
- Certain medications
- Autoimmune conditions
- Scalp inflammation or infection
- Tight hairstyles or repeated hair trauma
PRP or PRF will not correct an untreated medical, hormonal, nutritional, autoimmune, or infectious cause of hair loss. Your provider may recommend laboratory testing, primary-care evaluation, or referral to a dermatologist before beginning treatment.
Sudden, painful, patchy, rapidly worsening, or scarring hair loss should be medically evaluated.
Who May Be a Good Candidate?
PRP or PRF may be appropriate for adults who:
- Have early or moderate pattern hair thinning
- Still have functioning hair follicles in the treatment area
- Want a nonsurgical treatment option
- Understand that multiple treatments may be needed
- Have realistic expectations
- Are willing to follow a long-term maintenance plan
The best way to determine candidacy is through an in-person consultation and scalp evaluation.
Who May Not Be a Candidate?
Treatment may not be appropriate for individuals who:
- Have a platelet or bleeding disorder
- Have severe anemia or certain blood abnormalities
- Have an active scalp infection or open wound
- Have an uncontrolled medical condition
- Take medications that significantly affect bleeding or platelet function
- Have certain active cancers or serious illnesses
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have advanced hair loss with inactive follicles
- Have an undiagnosed form of sudden or scarring hair loss
Do not discontinue an anticoagulant, aspirin, or another prescribed medication unless directed by the clinician who prescribed it.
What to Expect
Consultation and Scalp Evaluation
Your provider will review your concerns, pattern of hair loss, medical history, medications, previous treatments, and goals. Photographs may be taken to monitor changes over time.
Additional medical evaluation or laboratory testing may be recommended.
Blood Draw and Preparation
A small amount of blood is drawn and placed into a specialized centrifuge. The sample is processed to prepare either PRP or PRF.
Scalp Treatment
The scalp is cleansed, and a topical or local numbing method may be used for comfort. The prepared PRP or PRF is then carefully injected into targeted areas of thinning.
Appointment Length
The full appointment generally takes approximately 60–90 minutes. Treatment time varies based on the size of the area being addressed.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Many patients begin with a series of approximately three treatments spaced about four weeks apart. Your provider may recommend a different schedule based on your hair-loss pattern, response, and treatment goals.
Maintenance treatments may be recommended every three to six months or on another individualized schedule.
Hair loss is often progressive. Continued maintenance or combination therapy may be needed to preserve improvement.
When Will I See Results?
Hair growth occurs slowly, so results are not immediate.
Some patients first notice:
- Reduced shedding within the first few months
- Early changes in thickness or density after approximately three to six months
- Continued improvement over six to twelve months
Not every patient responds, and the amount of improvement varies. Consistent photographs and follow-up evaluations are helpful for monitoring progress objectively.
Is There Downtime?
Most patients return to regular activities shortly after treatment. Temporary effects may include:
- Scalp tenderness
- Redness
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Pinpoint bleeding
- A feeling of tightness or pressure
- Headache
- Temporary sensitivity when touching or brushing the hair
These effects generally improve over several days.
Aftercare
Your provider will give you personalized aftercare instructions. General recommendations may include:
- Avoid washing or wetting the scalp for the period directed by your provider
- Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sweating for approximately 24 hours
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and excessive heat temporarily
- Avoid harsh hair chemicals or coloring until cleared
- Avoid scratching, rubbing, or massaging the treated areas
- Use only approved scalp and hair products
- Protect the scalp from excessive sun exposure
Do not take or discontinue anti-inflammatory or blood-thinning medications unless directed by an appropriate medical professional.
Potential Risks
Because PRP and PRF are prepared from your own blood, the risk of an allergic reaction to the platelet product may be lower than with foreign substances. However, treatment is not risk-free.
Potential risks include:
- Pain or tenderness
- Bleeding or bruising
- Swelling
- Infection
- Headache
- Temporary numbness or altered sensation
- Injury to a blood vessel or nerve
- Vasovagal symptoms or fainting
- Temporary increased shedding
- Scarring
- No visible improvement
- Unsatisfactory or uneven results
Risks and expected benefits will be reviewed during your consultation.
Combining PRP or PRF With Other Hair-Loss Treatments
Depending on the cause of your hair loss, your provider may recommend combining regenerative therapy with other options, such as:
- Topical minoxidil
- Prescription hair-loss medication
- Low-level light or laser therapy
- Nutritional correction when a deficiency is confirmed
- Hormonal or medical treatment when indicated
- Hair and scalp-care changes
- Hair-transplant procedures
PRP and PRF should complement—not replace—appropriate diagnosis and evidence-based treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PRP or PRF regrow hair?
PRP or PRF may improve shedding, thickness, or density in some patients with functioning follicles. Neither treatment can guarantee regrowth or create new follicles in areas of complete baldness.
Which is better for hair restoration: PRP or PRF?
PRP currently has more published clinical evidence for pattern hair loss. PRF is a newer option with emerging research. Your provider will recommend an option based on your individual needs rather than assuming one is always better.
Is the treatment painful?
Patients may feel pressure, pinching, or brief discomfort during injections. Numbing methods may be used to improve comfort.
Can both men and women receive treatment?
Yes. PRP and PRF may be considered for appropriate adult men and women after the cause of hair loss is evaluated.
Is PRP or PRF hair restoration FDA-approved?
PRP-processing devices may have FDA clearance for preparing blood components, but PRP and PRF injections are not specifically FDA-approved as drugs for treating hair loss.
Can this replace a hair transplant?
No. PRP and PRF do not transplant or create new follicles. They may be used as nonsurgical options for early thinning or incorporated into a broader treatment plan before or after a hair transplant.
Can I combine treatment with minoxidil?
Possibly. Combination therapy may be appropriate, but medication decisions should be made with a qualified healthcare provider.
Are results permanent?
Hair loss may continue because of genetics, hormones, aging, or other causes. Maintenance treatments and an ongoing hair-care plan may be needed.
